With such a wide array of events, RCS students who may not be gifted in Math or Spelling will now have a myriad of options in which to participate. Instead of merely the standard Speech, Art, Math Olympics, and Spelling offered by ACSI, PSIA offers 20 different contests including: Calculator (6-8), Mathematics (2-8), Number Sense (4-8), Science (6-8), Dictionary Skills (4-8), Information Skills (5-8), Listening Skills (4-8), Maps/Graphs/Charts (4-8), Spelling (2-8), Vocabulary (5-8), Creative Writing (1-2), Ready Writing (3-8), Music Memory (3-8), Art Memory (4-8), On-site Drawing (6-8), Storytelling (1-3), Prose/Poetry Interpretation (4-8), Modern Oratory (7-8), Impromptu Speaking (7-8), and One Act Play (6-8). There are countless advantages and opportunities offered by PSIA. We yielded a State Championship in Poetry, our entire team placed at the state level in Speech, we participated in Middle School One Act Play, and had an amazing experience. Last year, we decided to take a small team of six 8th graders to PSIA as part of our investigation. RCS has been investigating participation for approximately 5 years, due to the fact that most of the competitive speech/academic teams we face at the state level already utilize PSIA for 1-8 grade competitions.

While PSIA may sound unfamiliar, it has actually been around for 25 years and, though a secular organization, was founded by like-minded believers. Therefore, after much discussion, thought, and prayer, RCS has decided to partner with PSIA (Private Schools Interscholastic Association) for all future speech and academic competitions. This less competitive approach does not meet our school’s needs and will not adequately prepare us for high school competition, where we are the current TAPPS Speech State Champions, mainly due to our school-wide comprehensive speech program.

Additionally, ACSI has undergone systemic changes and will no longer be giving away medals/placements in any future speech meets. Last year, ACSI chose not to host any live speech meets and our school decided to take a break due to Covid restrictions. There are immeasurable benefits to a child becoming comfortable speaking in front of others. Speech enables us to communicate with one another, praise our Lord, share His love with others, and function in our daily lives. RCS has developed a comprehensive and successful program over the past ten years that students and parents look forward to year after year. Each year Rosehill Christian School participates in competitive speech meets through ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International).
